If you decide to invest in a real fur parka or coat, then it is necessary to know how to take care of it so that it lasts long. Apart from our articles on How to store your real fur parka & How to clean it, here are a few tips on how to take care of it while you wear it daily during the winter season.
How can I support it when I store it in the closet?
Always hang your fur coat on a broad-shouldered clothes hanger in an ample space in your closet (never squeeze a fur coat into a cramped corner). Use a cloth bag when traveling; never store your fur in a plastic bag (this will dry your coat out). Wire ones are a no-no. What should I do if it rains or snows on the fur coat or collar?
Most furs can handle snow and rain; so don't panic if your coat gets a little wet. Just shake it off and hang it to dry slowly, away from direct heat or sunlight. Resist the temptation to use a hair dryer, and don't comb or brush fur without proper treatment. If your coat has been soaked through, we recommend to take it to your local professional fur cleaner for proper treatment.
Can I use perfume on my fur coat or parka?
Furs don't appreciate being pricked or snagged with accessories like sharp jewelry. Also, avoid using shoulder bags on a constant basis because straps can break fur hairs and create bald patches. Avoid getting perfume or hairspray on your fur and, whatever you do, don't try treating your fur with insecticides or mothballs. Leave the protection to your professional fur cleaner or ask for guidance and learn how to do it yourself.
A Safe Home
During winter, give your fur coats and parka enough closet space and be sure it is not exposed to light or heat, which can cause fur to oxidize and change color.
